Olalla Valley Golf Club

General Course DescriptionOlalla Valley golf

[NOTE: The course closed in January 2022. As of that month, it appeared that the course would become housing.] Olalla Valley Golf Club is a hilly 9-hole public course carved out of the forest in the Coast Range (so there is less wind and a bit more sun than the coast) just to the east of Newport. In a very attractive location, there are several very interesting and tricky tree-lined holes. The fairways are inconsistent (in terms of types of grasses and cutting) and the greens consistent but slow. Trees, turns, and elevation changes are the main issues, but there are several creeks you have to contend with. Many blind shots may require you to play the course more than once to get an idea on how to play certain holes. It is pretty hilly and you may huff and puff when walking.

Course History

Although there is some disagreement, it appears that the course was built in 1956 (others say early 1960s). It has gone through several owners. In 2018 Grant Forest of Olalla Properties LLC sold the course to its present owner that is owned by Eric W. Anderson. Unfortunately, Mr. Anderson had to close the course in January of 2022.

Why It Is ThereOlalla Valley golf

Dr. Matthew Gruber wanted to build a course on the local dairy farm. Now the course has a local following.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

The course has many a blind shot, but 6 and 7 have the bells you ring when you clear those holes (8 has a bell as well, but that is just to wake-up the folks on the tee). The 6th hole is a tree-lined uphill par 5. You don’t have to go long on your drive, just get up to the first level. The next shot is uphill with the green on the left, behind the furthest tree left. If you go straight or right you may fall off a cliff. Best thing to do is lay up 120 yards out in the center. Hole 7 is a tree-lined par 4, dogleg right that goes up to the fir tree on the left and then steeply down as the hole turns right (with trouble all the way down the right side). Unless you can get past the fir (and even if you can, your ball may roll out to a bad spot), best to lay up before the tree on the center right about 130 yards from the green.

Did You Know

Olalla is derived from Olallie, a Chinook word for salmon berries.

Good For ThemOlalla Valley golf

This is the Toledo High School home course (where they practice and play for free). Juniors play for free with an adult. Hosts the Honor Flight Benefit Golf Tournament. providing funds to fly veterans back to DC to view monuments in their honor.

Why Play This Course

It can be muddy and some of the holes are difficult to understand, but the trees make it an attractive course, with a very nice staff at a good price. And if it is fogged-in at the coast, it may not be foggy here.

The course is in a beautiful spot and out of the coast wind, but it's rugged: rugged holes (narrow and up and down) and rugged conditions (lots of weeds and bare spots). Unless you hit it straight, be ready to loose a bunch of balls. Nice folks (playing and managing).

As of June 2020, the course was pretty shaggy, with long grass fairways and bumpy greens. But they have priced it right with continued winter rates. Some hard holes, but if you play more than nine, take a cart.
