General Course Description

Oswego Lake Country Club hosts an 18-hole private course just to the west of downtown Lake Oswego. The course is extremely well-maintained with beautiful old trees and some interesting and attractive holes. Although the course is not long, hills, trees, and traps increase the difficulty. The greens at Oswego Lake Country Club are very fast with many unseen breaks. The clubhouse is beautiful and historic. The staff (and members) at Oswego Lake Country Club are very friendly and helpful. The course is hilly (with one significant hill having a cart assist), but walkable.

Course History

Opened in 1925 as Lake Oswego Country Club (although often referred to back then as Oswego Lake Country Club).  The name was officially changed to Oswego Lake Country Club when the club welcomed former members of the Multnomah Golf Club in 1935 (bringing MCG members over to help boost declining membership caused by the depression). The course has undergone many modifications since then by many important Northwest architects (see Designer listing below). It has hosted the Oregon Amateur several times (going back to 1927 and most recently in 2024), the Oregon Open in 1963, and the Northwest Open in 1965. The City of Lake Oswego has designated the clubhouse as an historic site.

Why It Is There

Originally an iron ore mine, the property was developed into a golf course by Paul C. Murphy as part of the development of the City of Oswego (now Lake Oswego). It is now one of the premier private golf clubs in Portland.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

The holes gain yards because of the rolling terrain. Don’t short your shot. And the fast greens have many a break. Reread your line several times (even on short putts).

Did You Know

When the course was opened as a par 73, it was very hilly. The 17th hole had a Pierce Arrow open touring car on cables to take golfers up the hill.  When it opened, The Oregonian called it “The sportiest layout of the courses in and around Portland.”

Very well-maintained course with an interesting layout and great views of Mt Hood. Great amenities (including practice facilities), very friendly staff and membership. Don’t pass up an offer to play.
