Forest Hills Country Club

General Course DescriptionForest Hills Country Club

Nestled in a wooded valley in the south part of Reedsport on the central Oregon Coast between Highway 101 and the coast (although you never see the ocean from the course), Forest Hills Country Club is a 9-hole, public (but there are standing tee times for members) course. Forest Hills Country Club is a very open course that has a bit of everything: trees (some old and very tall), water, traps, turns, and elevation changes. The fairways are mixed and the greens are small but in good condition. It is a little hilly, but a nice walk. It has a dual tee-box system for 18 holes and there is a significant difference in tee boxes on two holes, particularly the second hole, a par 3. This course should not be confused with Forest Hills Golf Course in Cornelius.

Course History

Opened in 1962 as a private country club. In 1986, it was purchased by the members and has become public with members having reserved tee times.

Why It Is There

International Paper built the course for the workers at its mill in Gardiner (which closed some time ago). Members and the public keep it active.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

The 5th hole is a long par 4 dogleg right with a creek (and trees) that goes up the right side. From the tee box, a ridge of the hill on which the 4th green sits blocks the left side of the fairway. There is room on the other side of the ridge and you want to be center or center-left of the fairway to have a good approach. The 9th hole is a par 4 where you drive over a rise. On the left there is a large evergreen and a small marsh right behind it that you cannot see (so don’t go over there).

Did You Know

The white oak to the west of the pro shop came from the seed of the tree near Benjamin Franklin’s grave and is referred to as the “Franklin Tree.”

Good For Them

The course holds junior camps in the summer.   It is the home for Reedsport High School. The course annually holds an event called “100 Holes for Hunger,” benefiting the local food bank. Until recently, one person would play 100 holes, but now two people play 50 holes (which is still an achievement).

Why Play This Course

A course with some interesting holes in an attractive, forested setting that is just back from the ocean (so less wind). A nice course at a fair price. The friendly and helpful staff are a plus.
