Frontier Golf Course

General Course DescriptionFrontier golf

Just down the road from Willamette Country Club outside of Canby (about 25 miles south from downtown Portland), Frontier Golf Course is a comfortable, rural 9-hole par 3.  All tees are on mats, and all holes have western themed names. The large mature trees are the predominant hazzard (with some holes requiring a shot over, under, or around a tree). The mounded greens are small, requiring accuracy. Holes range in length from 90 yards to 174 (taking the optional back tees on the 9th). Conditions on the course have improved greatly under the new owners. Frontier Golf Course is a flat, short, easy walk.

Course History

Four holes opened in 1964 in the backyard of Joe Sisul in an area that had several chicken coops. The final 5 were added thereafter. The course was closed to the public from 1970 to 1980. The Sisul family then reopened the course and operated it until 2002, when they sold it to Jim and Laurie Mickelsen. In 2011, the property was subject to a bankruptcy case and was sold in 2013. In 2017, the course was sold to the present owners, Chris and Terri Lynn Gesik. The Gesiks would take their children to play the course when they were young.

Why It Is There

Joe Sisul wanted to clear out a bunch of chicken coops in his backyard. He heard about Bob Hope’s private, 3-hole course in his backyard and thought “why not.”

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

Because of the trees, you have to navigate over or under, you need more than a wedge and putter to allow creativity.

Good For Them

This is the practice course for the Canby High School Girl’s Golf Team. The course hosts the Hillbilly Masters benefiting Young Life, an organization that introduces youth to Christ and helps them grow in their faith.

Did You Know

The flag pole next to the clubhouse was originally installed in Salt Lake City for the winter Olympics.

Why Play This Course

A nice laid-back outing for a little over a buck a hole in a rural setting. Good place to learn or to just have fun.
