Grants Pass Golf Club

General Course DescriptionGrants Pass golf

Grants Pass Golf Club is a very-well-maintained (nicely rolling greens) and beautiful 18-hole semi-private (members have priority tee times) course nestled in the Rogue Valley just south of Grants Pass. The area as well as the course is filled with mature pine trees, which make the course attractive and some holes very narrow. Water is often in play. Front 9 is flat with many houses in view. Back 9 is hilly and among the trees. Generally, public play is allowed in the afternoon if it does not conflict with a club-sponsored event. Grants Pass Golf Club has a good looking clubhouse and very friendly staff.  Although hilly, the course is walkable.

Course History

First 9 opened in 1948, designed by “Founding Members.” The second 9 opened in 1972, designed by Bob E. Baldcock and Robert Baldcock (with a redesign of the front 9 as well). In 2005 Jim Ramey did a remodel.

Why It Is There

Executives from several local timber companies wanted to build a course. So they got together in 1946 and sold shares to finance the purchase of a 100-acre horse ranch, which became the course. It is now a well-used (but not overused) center of golf and social activity for the area.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

With the water and many trees, it does not pay to be greedy. Consider leaving the driver in the bag.

Did You Know

The original pro, Scotty Maisack, was previously employed at Oakmont CC in Pennsylvania, and was the pro for Gene Sarazen.

Good For Them

GPGC has a continuing and historically great junior program. In the past, GPGC has produced many great high school and college players (including Amanda Neadly, Walt Perterfield, Glen Lukart, Kevin Misimins, and Johanna Nealy). The junior program is open to non-members. It is also the home course for all three local high schools: North Valley, Hidden Valley, and Grants Pass. The course hosts tournaments supporting the golf programs at the local high schools and the Play For Pink Tournament supporting breast cancer research.

Why Play This Course

A beautiful and very-well-maintained course with challenging and varied holes. Great staff (and members) and attractive setting, and it is not that expensive. Overall, GPGC provides a great golfing experience.
