General Course Description
King City Golf Course is a short 9-hole public course just off of Highway 99W southwest of Portland (and a driver from Summerfield Golf and Country Club). King City Golf Course is a nice, parklike green space just off a busy highway. Houses do line the course and the course is short (the par 4s are short and the one par 5 is very short), but the par 3s are long and mature trees narrow several holes. Conditions are good given the price. It’s basically flat, so an easy walk. Forward tees do make it easier in both distance and angle.
Course History
Opened in 1966. In 1971, the ownership of the course transferred to its present owner, the King City Civic Association.
Why It Is There
Built as part of the planned unity retirement community of King City.
I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played
The course is pretty much in front of you, except the trap behind the 3rd green that you can’t see until you are close. The 8th hole, a short straight par 4, feels open because of the road on the left. In the summer of 2017, there were no markers indicating the road was out of bounds, but we were informed that it was.
Did You Know
They used to use the same “goose dog” company that Summerfield does to clear geese off the course (but I was assured that the geese don’t keep going back and forth between the courses). They switched to using a bird deterrent (green) laser.
Good For Them
Use the treated (cleaned) affluent from the local sewer agency to water the course. They allow the local high school teams (Tualatin and Tigard) to play for free. They host the annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament to benefit the local community foundation.
Why Play This Course
Within, yet out of the bustle of, the Southwest Portland metro area, it provides a nice walk on a course with a friendly staff and grounds that are in good condition especially given the price.
