La Grande Country Club

General Course DescriptionLa Grande golf

La Grande Country Club has a lovely, old 9-hole (18 using dual tees) private course in, of course, La Grande. If you are from outside the county, you should be able to get on the course even if you are not a member.  The course has a wide variety of large, beautiful trees. The trees, traps, sand, water, and narrow fairways provide for a challenging and scenic course. Members and staff at La Grande Country Club are very friendly (and like to show their course off).  Easy to walk with occasional views of the nearby mountains.

Course History

Built in 1928 in an apple orchard, with the fairways defined by the remaining apple trees. The trees shed so much that the majority were taken out (you can still see a few) and a wide variety of other trees were planted.

Why It Is There

An initial course (said to have been built in 1916) was being converted to an airport and the members wanted a course in the area.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

The narrowness of the holes encourage you to keep the driver in the bag. In addition, on the 9th hole, there is a creek about 70 yards from the green that you can’t see until you are near it.

Did You KnowLa Grande golf

The course architect, Bill Baker, became famous for the courses he designed in France. Also, each Spring, they have a “Members Work Day” where up to 90 members come out on a volunteer basis to get the course ready for the season.

Good For Them

The course holds multiple junior clinics for both member and non-member children. The course has an award-winning nine-hole “Juniors-Only” course with short flags and enlarged holes. An adult can only play the Juniors Course as a guest of a junior. The course is the home course for La Grande and Imbler High Schools.  The course annually hosts the Grande Ronde Amateur for the benefit of the Grande Ronde Hospital Foundation and the Tiger Booster Tournament to support the local high school sports programs.
