RiverRidge Golf Course

General Course Description

THIS COURSE IS NOW CLOSEDRiver Ridge golf

RiverRidge Golf Course is a family-owned-and-operated 9-hole public course in north Eugene. RiverRidge is well maintained and open (few out-of-bounds and no undergrowth), but trees make some holes narrow. Although trees provide the main obstacles, traps and water (in the form of ponds and streams) come into play. Well maintained fairways and very consistent greens. Flat and very walkable. The forward tees provide a good benefit of decreased distance and improved angle.

Course History

Opened in 1989 as part of a golf complex, which included an 18 hole course (of which the current course was the front 9), an executive course (called Sutton Ridge), and a 3-par course (called Short Ridge). The executive and 3-par courses and the back 9 of the 18-hole course all closed in 2017. The last 9 closed in 2021.

Why It Is ThereRiver Ridge golf

Rick Jeffries (a Class A golf pro raised in Oregon, but working in Florida at the time) and Debbie Jeffries wanted to build a golf complex in Eugene.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

Most holes are not that long and most do not have wide driving areas, so short center may be preferred. Hole 8 is a par-4 dogleg right with a slight downhill where the fairway turns at about 200 and drops at about 150 from the center of the green. Playing to the right of the cedar tree at the corner on the drive is a good place to go.

Did You Know

The course has a good variety of trees and some of the Douglas Firs on the course are over 400 years old.

Good For Them

Lots. It is an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Course. It uses an Integrated Pest Management program to identify weed, insect, and disease problems and utilize many methods for control other than chemical. It holds weekly summer clinics to encourage and teach all women, conducted by Pat Church. It has junior leagues, is the home of the Willamette Valley Chapter of the First Tee Program, holds Nike Golf Camps, and is the home for Sheldon and South Eugene High Schools. It hosts Special Olympics Regional Tournaments (and participants and coaches play for free).

Why Play This CourseRiver Ridge golf

It is a family-run course that gives back to the community, with a strong support of junior golfers.  Five sets of tee boxes (there is a family tee totaling 1489 yards) make it a great place for people of many skill sets to play. And it is a good course at a fair price.

The complex is a shadow of its former self and is now surrounded by houses. But the 9 holes that remain are a challenge and really well maintained. Still a good place to play.
