Salmon Run Golf Course

General Course DescriptionSalmon Run golf

Salmon Run Golf Course is a beautifully designed 18-hole public course east of Brookings on the Southern Oregon Coast. The course is in a very attractive setting — nestled in a tree-filled valley with few buildings, near the coast but far enough away to be a bit sunnier and drier than the beach. The design of Salmon Run Golf Course  provides several challenging holes, with water (mostly in the front), trees (mostly in the back), and elevation changes.  Fairways are mixed, but well mowed; greens are consistent and hold well (this is a vast improvement over the conditions of the course as of 2016). Forward tee boxes provide better angles as well as much shorter holes. The course is hilly, with an occasional long walk between holes; take a cart.

Course History

Opened in 1999 by the City of Brookings. Originally designed and developed by Troy Claveran and his family. The course has suffered a series of events, including severe flooding in 2016 and 2018, and a fire in 2017 (which did not singe the course but stopped operations for a time). By the spring of 2016, the course would have been charitably considered as in poor condition.  Later that year, the City of Brookings hired Early Management Team to take over course operations. Early did a remarkable job in improving the conditions of the course. In 2021, CourseCo, Inc (who also manages, among other courses, Juniper GC) took over management of the course and continues to make improvements.

Why It Is There

The City of Brookings wanted a course.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

The yardage book is free. Take it, as there are a lot of obstacles on many holes. More so than most courses, match your handicap, and not the total yardage, to the proper tees. When the holes are short, they are narrow and a ball off the fairway will likely be out of play (and probably not findable).

Did You Know

Raymond Claveran, father of the designer, was the original pro.

Good For Them

They do lots of things. They have junior memberships, several junior clinics, and participate in the Youth on Course program. They are the home course for the Brookings-Harbor High School golf teams. They hold several charity events including, among other things: the Prowl & Growl, to benefit the K-9 program at the Brookings Police Department; The Brookings Harbor Educational Foundation Golf Tournament; the Kaitlyn’s Cause Golf Tournament named after Kaitlyn Wallace to benefit Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital Cancer Ward; and the Boyd Carson Memorial Greenskeeper Revenge, named after a former greenskeeper to benefit local charities. The new management also deeply cares about the environment. The Jack River, which comes into play on several holes, is a salmon spawning ground. Course is maintained in an aquatic friendly manner. with frequent testing and input from Oregon Fish and Wildlife. The facility is working to become an Audubon Certified facility.

Why Play This Course

The Southern Oregon Coast is one of the most beautiful areas of the state, and anyone that enjoys natural beauty should visit. If you are a golfer and you are in the area, you should play this attractive and challenging course that is now well maintained.
