Sandelie Golf Course

General Course Description

NOTE: The course was sold and then closed in late summer 2022Sandelie golf

Sandelie Golf Course is an 18-hole public course about 30 minutes to the Southeast of downtown Portland.  Almost all the holes are treelined, but the first 9 feels very open as the fairways are wide; the back 9 is much narrower (and shorter). The fairways are a bit shaggy with mixed grass type and (in the summer) rough is generally differentiated by dryness rather than cut. The greens are spotty and slow, but hold well and are consistent. Sandelie Golf Course is a rural course with a nice, laid-back, friendly atmosphere. The pricing, general openness of the course, and the option for very forward (yellow) tees make it a good place to learn and hone the game. The course is pretty flat and easy to walk.

Course History

First 9 (now back 9) built in 1969. Second 9 built in 1972.

Why It Is There

Bill and Janet Kaiser wanted a course on the family farm when the surrounding land was being developed in the 1960s and 1970s, including Sandelie Golf Estates. The course has been owned and operated by the Kaiser family ever since. In the late summer of 2022, the course was sold and then closed. There is a possibility that the new owners may open a short course on the property.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I PlayedSandelie golf

The yellow stones in the fairway on the front 9 mark tee areas for juniors and new players. Hole 6 is a par-4 severe dogleg right. You want to be near the base of or to the right of the fir tree that is straight away from the tee box to avoid the trees on the right as you make the turn. On the par-3 8th hole, the green is severely two-tiered (much lower in the front).

Did You Know

More than 50 years after they opened the course, you can still meet a member of the Kaiser family working in the pro shop or out maintaining the course.

Good For Them

Ponds on the course collect water that is then used for irrigation. Durring the summer water is conserved by only watering tees, fairways, and greens.
