Tualatin Country Club

General Course DescriptionTualatin Country Club

Tualatin Country Club hosts a 18-hole private course south of Portland that is a beautiful classic course, with large mature trees lining the well-maintained fairways. Greens are also very well maintained with several breaks, many subtle, and require looks from several vantages. Traps, water, bends, and some elevation changes will keep your interest. The course has a great history and wonderful amenities. Although holes 7 and 8 seem slightly out of place, they have their own challenges. Tualatin Country Club is a great place to play, with a very nice staff and friendly members. It’s a bit of a hill to get down and back from 7 and 8, but the course is otherwise fairly flat and very walkable.

Course History

Opened in 1912, the fourth course in Oregon. A significant remodel occurred in 1992. The course has hosted many events including several Oregon Opens (the trophy is named for Harold West, a long time pro at the course), several Oregon Amateurs (going back to 1922), the 1986 Northwest Open, and several U.S. Open qualifiers. In 2022 the facility was named OGA’s Golf Course/Facility of the year.

Why It Is ThereTualatin Country Club

A group of Portland-area professionals, who had been barred from membership in other recreational clubs, purchased 100 acres from the Seek family next to Tualatin’s two main railroads. This allowed easy access from Portland.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

With the size and speed of the greens, a good short game is very helpful here (and it is a big help to stay below the hole). Hole 8 is a narrow par 4 along the Tualatin River. Trees seem to push the fairway left and then right, but the drive is straight.

Did You Know

In the early years, to pay off the cost of construction, slot machines were installed in the clubhouse with proceeds used for funding.

Good For Them

The course holds development programs for women, and golf camps for juniors (members and friends). Teaching course for both Tigard and Tualatin High Schools. Reclaimed water is put into the ponds and then used for irrigation via a computerized system with individual sprinkler control. Has an integrated pest-management plan that includes a buffer along the Tualatin River to prevent any type of chemical runoff.  The course is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
