Condon Golf Course

General Course DescriptionCondon golf

This 9-hole municipal course in the attractive town of Condon is wide open and reasonably long. The Condon Golf Course has no pro shop, just a kiosk; put your money in the honesty box and play.  Generally, the Condon Golf Course has a basic back-and-forth design, with a twist or two. Fairway grass is a bit long, but uniform in terms of grass type (there are brown spots in summer). The greens are small, mounded, hold well, and slow but consistent.  Narrowness of the fairways (the rough is longer but easy to recover from), smallness of the greens, and trees (most are limbed up and easy to recover from) are the primary concerns. You feel like you are in the country with the course abutting grain fields, a grain silo, and the edge of town. Compact and fairly flat, it’s a nice walk.

Course History

Opened in 1967 on the site of a former lumber mill (old machinery parts on the course are from the mill).

Why It Is There

The City of Condon wanted a course and built one. Often, this course is coupled with the courses in Fossil and Heppner to form a mid-Eastern Oregon golf tour.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

On the 1st hole, a slightly uphill par 5, there is a trap in the center of the fairway about 10 yards before the green that you may not see on your approach. On the short par-4 6th hole, a tree-lined dogleg left, unless you can work the ball right to left around the trees, play out to the adjacent fairway of the 7th hole. There is an opening back to the 6th green. And the thick white stakes on the sides of some holes mark 200 yards from the tee; they are not OB stakes (it is a pretty open course).

Did You Know

The former pro shop, just to the east of the kiosk, was the town’s former kindergarten.

Good For Them

Host course for the Annual 4th of July Dave Barnett Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit nonprofits in Condon. The course has served as an overnight camp for Cycle Oregon.

Why Play This Course

Everyone should visit Condon, and if you are in Condon, it’s a fine course to play, especially given the price (less than $1 a hole if you play it twice or more).
