Crosswater Golf Club

General Course DescriptionCrosswater golf

Crosswater Golf Club has a private, 18-hole course you can access by staying in Sunriver (or by having a friend as a member). The course at Crosswater Golf Club is one of the most beautiful, interesting, and highly acclaimed courses in Central Oregon. Several holes play within towering trees. Others play over and around the Little Deschutes River. With  frequent views of the mountains, it is a spectacular site for a golf course. The course can be punishing. Errant shots are generally penalized. You must park your ego and choose the tees that best suit you (this is not a course to reduce your index).  Forward tees provide better distance and angles. Although the course is not hilly, there are long stretches between holes and a cart is advisable.

Course History

Completed in 1995 as part of the Sunriver Resort. Since then, it hosted the PGA Champions Tour Tradition from 2007 to 2010, the 2006 NCAA Division 1 Men’s Championship, the 2000 NCAA Division 1 Women’s Championship, and multiple Oregon Opens. It has also co-hosted (with Meadows) the 2001, 2007, 2013, and 2017 PGA Professional Championship. In 2019, the course was ranked as one of the top 10 courses in Oregon. In 2023, the course was ranked 54 in Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses.

Why It Is ThereCrosswater golf

Built as part of the Sunriver Resort.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

On the 10th hole, there is a waste area that crosses the fairway about 80 yards from the green, and on the 11th hole, there is a trap on the left at the 150 pole that you may not see from the tee.

Did You Know

The cemetery on 11 holds the remains of three generations of the Allen family, who homesteaded the property. Also, when the course opened, it was the longest course in the United States. The 12th hole was named in 2017 by the OGA as one of the most interesting holes in Oregon.

Good For Them

By removing the cattle that were grazing in the area, the course improved the condition of the land. There is a wildlife buffer around the property, and a stated goal of the course is to be sensitive to the natural environment and its flora and fauna. It is an Audubon Certified Sanctuary Course. The resort was awarded Golf Digest’s 2009 Green Star Award for its efforts in preserving the natural environment. The course annually hosts the Showcase Golf Tournament to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Why Play This CourseCrosswater golf

Often named as one of the best places to play in the country and rightly so. The setting is spectacular, and the course is beautiful. Although expensive, and playing the course can be frustrating (pick the right tees!), you will still be in awe of the course and glad you played it.
