General Course Description
Evergreen Golf Course is a 9-hole public course in Mt. Angel, about 20 miles northeast of Salem. Evergreen Golf Course has rolling fairways and is surrounded by farmland with views of Mt. Hood. The fairways and greens are in generally good shape, with the greens undulating a bit. Although Evergreen Golf Course is a short course, there are some interesting holes. The course has some hills, but is very walkable.
Course History
Built in 1962 by Bill Schafer. The present owners bought the course in 2004 and have been making improvements since (recently adding drainage).
Why It Is There
Bill Schafer wanted to build, own, and operate a golf course. The course now has a good local following.
I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played
The 3rd hole is a par 5, dogleg left. If you hit your drive too far you might end up in the lake that is in the middle of the 5th hole. Also, if the course is pretty empty, you may want to hit your tee shot on the par-3 4th and then hit your tee shot on the adjacent par-5 5th before playing out the 4th hole (and avoid the long walk from the 4th green back to the 5th tee box).
Did You Know
Family owners of this course also own McKay Creek.
Good For Them
The owners and pro do a great job reaching out to juniors: work with Youth On Course (so juniors do not play more than $5 a round), and free clubs are available to use for kindergartens and elementary schools kids. The course is the home course for Kennedy and Silverton High Schools.
Why Play This Course
Laid-back, family friendly, generally short and open course. You take the family and have a good time. (If you are an Oregon State fan, you will feel the warmth.)
