General Course Description
Hidden Valley Golf Course is a 9-hole (with dual tees, 18-holes) public course about 20 miles south of Eugene. The holes are lined with beautiful old trees (that sometimes cause very narrow fairways). Although a bit short, trees, elevation changes, and small but well-maintained greens promote difficulty. Hidden Valley Golf Course has the feel of a classic park-like course that is a bit run down, but quiet and welcoming. A little hilly, but a reasonable walk.
Course History
Built in 1929 as a 10-hole course. (It still is a 10-hole course — players are to switch out the 3rd/12th hole on the second 9.)
Why It Is There
Originally a brick yard, Bill Zimmerly through Bennett Creek Holding Company wanted to establish a country club.
I Wish I would Have Known Before I played
Greens all break to the clubhouse (many severely).
Did You Know
In 1959, DeRoss Kincaid, then 19-years old, played 365 holes here in 36 hours, setting a world record for most consecutive holes played. He played well, as he broke the course record four times. Local golfers lined their cars on the fairways to light the way as Mr. Kincaid played through the night.
Good For Them
Dan Nord, the owner and manager, is a master gardener and has taken major efforts to improve sustainability: composting all cuttings, very limited use of fertilizer, no pesticides, and only doing hand watering. He also recruits new players from elementary and middle schools offering junior camp and reduced rates. Practice course for Cottage Grove High School. The course annually hosts a tournament for the local Elks Club to benefit the Casey Eye Institute.
Why Play This Course
Beautiful trees. Very quiet and peaceful. And the sustainability efforts by Mr. Nord are impressive.
