Middlefield Golf Course

General Course DescriptionMiddlefield Golf Course

Middlefield Golf Course is an 18-hole, public, executive course about 20 miles south of Eugene. It is a tale of two 9s, with the front side having shot, straight, and narrow par 4s (with par 3s mixed in) and the back side having doglegs, left and right, a par 5 (short but with two doglegs) and a long, par-4 dogleg that would benefit greatly from a straight, 250-yard drive.  Both sides have all the hazards you would generally find on a course: tall trees, sand, and water. The trees are cut high so you can recover from an errant shot.  The fairways of mixed grass are generally well maintained and the greens are very nice. Middlefield Golf Course is built on either side of I-5, so there is constant traffic noise (dull on some holes, loud on others). On the long holes, forward tees help with distance and angles. The course is short, compact, and an easy walk.

Course History

The course opened in 1991 on property that was owned by the Woodard family and used as a dairy cattle ranch and corn field.  The City of Cottage Grove bought the course in 2006 for the water rights as well as a location to spread effluent water.

Why It Is There

Kim Woodard developed the course as part of the Middlefield Village housing development. Use of the course by the City for other purposes allows reasonable pricing, and the course has a strong following.

I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played

Don’t get lulled by the front 9. As you leave the 9th hole, you may think you have the course figured out (be straight, it’s okay to drive short because the holes are short). But you need to adjust your thinking as you approach the 10th hole, the first of several doglegs that seem to get progressively longer.

Did You Know

The tunnels under I-5 used to connect the two sides of the course were built to allow the cows to cross without incident. The large statue in front of the clubhouse is of Harry Vardon (considered by many as the greatest golfer in the world during the late 1890s and early 1900s).

Good For Them

Course is used by the City for effluent, and the City also uses the path on the outside of the course for biking, walking, and running. They have had a summer junior golf program since the 1990s, for boys and girls.

Why Play This Course

The course has a relaxed feel and can accommodate a wide variety of players.  Course conditions have improved over the years, and for the price, it’s not a bad stop.
