General Course Description
[Note: Course closed on November 3, 2019]
An 18-hole, historic, private course in Klamath Falls that provides limited tee times to non-member, out-of-county residents and a limited number of passes to local residents. Classic course that is very open and in great condition. Although Highway 97 is on one side and the Columbia Forest Products plant is on the other, you are generally drawn to the well-manicured fairways and greens. Although a bit short, approach shots involve getting over sand or trees. The greens are generally receptive, but are usually elevated, tilted, and very fast. The club is very generous to outsiders with several freebies and clinics, and the staff and members are very nice. Forward tees provide shorter distances and better angles. There are a few significant hills, but the course is walkable.
Course History
First 9 (now back) was built in 1924, second 9 was built in 1965 (with the first 9 being remodeled). Hosted 1959 Oregon PGA.
Why It Is There
Two local hunters wanted to build a course, and Evan Reams donated the property.
I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played
On holes 13 and 14 there are traps that you cannot see from the tee that are in the landing area. Hole 9 is a severe dogleg left and you can easily hit through the fairway (which goes steeply down before turning and going up to the elevated green). It is possible to cut the corner, but you may want to wait for the second time you play the hole before you try that. On the 11th hole, a long uphill par 4, there is a slight dogleg right at the end and trees come in on the right. Best to stay left on the drive.
Did You Know
The flags are color-coded for pin placement. But what colors are used will depend on the outcome of the Men’s Club annual Oregon v. Oregon State Tournament.
Good For Them
Free women’s clinics in the summer (some guests of members are allowed). Has a junior summer teaching program (for both members and guests). The local high school teams can practice for free after 3. Course gets the bulk of its fertilizer from local farmers. The course hosts annual charity events for Special Olympics Oregon Klamath County and Jefferson State Youth Shooting Club.
Why Play This Course
A very well-maintained course with an interesting layout and a nice history (a Chandler Egan course). The generosity of the course and kindness of the staff are a plus.
