Seaside Golf Club

General Course DescriptionSeaside golf

This is a 9-hole, public, historic course in Seaside on the Oregon Coast. Although the Necanicum River flows through the course, and there are trees and some traps, Seaside Golf Club is generally a very wide-open course with most of the hazards never coming into play (you cross the creek on two holes and go around it on another). The raised greens are small but fair. Some fairways ungulate and are a mixture of grass and weeds. The owners recognize this and allow free drops on certain holes (check the local rules). Although next to the ocean, you never see it. The clubhouse is within a building that has a restaurant and bar (with good food). Seaside Golf Club has a nice staff and is very flat and an easy walk.

Course History

Opened in 1923 and developed by M.C. Holbrook, using famed architect Chandler Egan. It has been owned by many people since then, most notably (and probably for the longest period) by J.B. Cartwright and his son Charles. In 1969, Charles announced that he was going to expand the course to 18 holes as part of a housing development. For whatever reason, that never occurred. It was purchased by the current owner, Seaside Golf Club, Inc., a few years ago. The principal of that entity, Phillip Warmbrodt, grew up in Seaside and played the course as a child.

Why It Is There

Mr. Holbrook (who also assisted in the development of the Eastmoreland Golf Course in Portland) thought a course in Seaside would be a good idea.

The first hole is a par 5 (make use of the free drop). As you approach the green, trees come in from the left. Go up the right side of the fairway to have a good approach shot to the very small green. On number 4, a 5 par with a significant dog leg left, keep your drive (and even your second shot) on the right side of the fairway to have a clear next shot.

Did You Know

When the course opened, the 2nd hole was purported to be the farthest west golf hole in the United States.

Good For Them

Have junior summer camps. Annually hold the Glenn Bard Tournament to benefit local charities.

Why Play This CourseSeaside Oregon golf

Because it is a little short and has wide open fairways (and free drops), it is a nice next step-up from an executive course — you can spray it a little more and it will still be in play. The reasonable pricing, nice staff, and good food are pluses.

Fun and challenging course. Feels like Scotland on a foggy day. But if you are concerned about COVID transmission, stay away. The course has done nothing to protect its guests (employees don't wear masks, there is no prevention from allowing a ball to drop in the hole, rakes and ball washers are out).
