General Course Description
The Chief Egan Course is a 9-hole public 3-par course that is part of Silvies Valley Ranch. Located in a beautiful high-desert plateau between John Day and Burns in Eastern Oregon, this very-well-maintained course sits in a bowl below The Hideout pro shop and cafe that serves all the courses. It is nice and short, with the longest hole being 120 yards. It is treeless, but four holes have water (or a water course) and many have sage. Fairways run a little slower than the 18-hole courses, but the greens are just as good (hard and fast and true). The Chief Egan Course is an easy walk.
Course History
Opened in 2017.
Why It Is There

The Ranch wanted a par 3 for practice and for those who are just starting out playing golf.
I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played
The tee boxes are long, so to get fair yardage information, walk off the distances from the yardage sign to the tee (unless you have a range finder). The greens are as good as the 18-hole courses, so they are difficult to hold and the ball runs well.
Did You Know
The course is named for a Paiute Indian Chief killed on Battle Mountain (located north of John Day) by the U.S. Cavalry. (But you have to wonder about the karma with that name and H. Chandler Egan.)
Good For Them
The Hideout, which also has a cafe, is off the grid, relying on solar and propane.
Why Play This Course
A beautiful spot and a well-maintained par-3 course. Good place to practice or to learn the game.
