General Course Description
Located in downtown Roseburg, Stewart Park Golf Course is a classic municipal course — open, to accomodate a wide range of players, but with interesting holes that are maintained well, but are a little rough around the edges because of the amount of use. You can recover from most errant shots, but big trees, water, and a good use of rough with some turns and elevation changes make it a challenge. Small, steep, but well running greens, add to the difficulty. Nice staff and adequate practice facilities. Stewart Park Golf Course has a compact layout with some hills; it is a nice walk.
Course History
Opened, in 1958 as Roseburg Municipal Golf Club in vacant land next to the Veterans Administration complex. The area was originally farmland and was purchased by the VA. It became surplus land and was purchased by Charles B. Stewart, who donated the property to the City who turned the property into a park, nature preserve, and the golf course. It was run by the City until 2014 when management was turned over to Umpqua Golf Management, LLC (which also runs Oak Hills Golf Club in Sutherlin and Myrtle Creek Golf Club in Myrtle Creek).
Why It Is There
The City of Roseburg wanted to build a golf course.
I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played
There is an occasional back tee. These convert some par 4s into par 5s when you play a second 9. The 6th hole (named by The Oregonian in 1994 as one of the “Nasty Nine” holes in Oregon) is a par 4, or a par 5 from the back tee. You need to drive it beyond the 100 pole because the fairway makes almost a U-turn left (around some big trees) and goes up to a very elevated green. And on the 7th hole, which is a par 3 across a pond from a very elevated tee, play the yardage flat (unless you can feel the wind on the tee and see the flag moving), as the wind above the trees that you cannot feel will tend to force the ball down.
Did You Know
The course invites a few professional hunting/retrieving dogs to come out at night to scare the geese. It’s not 100 percent effective, but the geese numbers have been substantially reduced.
Good For Them
Work with Roseburg Parks and Recreation to provide women’s “Just For Fun” summer programs. Hold six-week summer golf clinics for boys and girls, 8 to 18. They have short yardage all-weather tees for beginners. They do not use any chemicals in areas around water.
Why Play This Course
An interesting course that is well priced. A nice place for a low stress round.

Course is a bit shaggy and in need of some care. But the price is right and the staff are great.
