General Course Description
Widgi Creek Golf Course is an attractive, very-well-maintained, tree-lined, 18-hole public course near downtown Bend. Although traps, water, doglegs, and elevation changes all come into play, it is the trees (almost all Ponderosa) that provide the beauty to the course, and the trees and the true and well-running but tricky greens that provide the challenge. Widgi Creek Golf Course has a nice mix of holes, and multiple tee boxes can make it a challenge for the good player and accessible for those of lesser skills. The club has very nice practice facilities. Forward tees provide the benefit of better angles and shorter distances. The course at Widgi Creek Golf Club is rolling, but a nice walk.
Course History
Opened in 1989 as Seventh Mountain Golf Village. Soon thereafter, the course changed its name to Pine Meadows. By 1993, the course had run into financial difficulties and was sold. The new owners changed the name to Widgi Creek. By 2003, the course again suffered from financial problems and the owner filed for bankruptcy. In 2004, the course was sold to its present owner through a trustee’s sale.
Why It Is There
Built by investors to be adjunct to, but not a part of, the neighboring Inn at the Seventh Mountain. Although it has experienced poor financial times, the most recent incarnation has found the right mix of care and pricing to become very popular.
I Wish I Would Have Known Before I Played
The course is in front of you, but it is narrow. Don’t challenge the sides of the fairways (as limbs come over the fairway sides), and favor being in the fairway over distance. The 11th through 14th holes are on a ridge over the Deschutes River. The greens on these holes tend to break towards the river. (There is a very nice view of the river from behind the 15th tee.)
Did You Know
The par-5 3rd hole, which measures 653 from the tips, is one of the longest holes in the country.
Good For Them
Multiple junior clinics held each summer. It is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
